Why Excel for Mac is not supported by Konsolidator

Konsolidator does not support Mac, unfortunately. Read this article to get an in-depth description of why. 


The Konnect Framework, which has an established connection to our API Konsolidator Konnect, is built to work with Microsoft Excel on Windows. It relies on specific features in Excel’s Power Query engine that are not available on Excel for Mac.

When you may encounter issues using Mac

You may encounter issues when you:

    • Open a Konnect Framework file on Excel for Mac
    • Try to refresh data from the Konsolidator API
    • Are asked to choose a privacy level but cannot proceed

Why the Konnect Framework requires Excel on Windows 

The Konnect Framework uses Power Query connections created in Excel on Windows.

    • On Windows, Power Query includes a Data Privacy Firewall
    • This firewall uses Privacy Levels to control how data sources are combined – and makes sure that data from different sources doesn’t leak data to each other
    • When the Konnect Framework is built, these privacy settings are stored as metadata in the file

Excel for Mac can read this metadata, but:

    • It does not include the same Privacy Firewall functionality
    • It cannot properly modify or override the stored privacy settings

As a result, Excel on Mac may block connections or require actions that cannot be completed.

What this means for Mac users

    • The Konnect Framework is not compatible with Excel for Mac
    • We therefore do not support running Konnect files on Mac

However, you are still able to work with the API Konsolidator Konnect on Mac by building your own setup.

Using the API on Mac (Alternative approach)

If you are working on Mac, you can:

    • Create a new, blank Excel file
    • Build your own connection to the Konsolidator API using Power Query
    • Recreate the required tables and queries manually

Because the connection is created on Mac, it will not include the Windows-based privacy metadata.

Excel for Mac does not include the Data Privacy Firewall. This means:

    • There is a higher risk when combining multiple data sources
    • Data from Konsolidator could unintentionally be exposed to another source
    • The risk increases if you connect to public or external data sources

To reduce risk:

    • Avoid combining Konsolidator data with other data sources in the same query
    • Be especially cautious in more complex setups (e.g. Power BI or data warehouses)
